Commissioned Artwork
In the old sailing days before photos were commonplace, ship owners, captains and sailors alike would commission nautical artists to paint a portrait of the ship that was their pride, their home and their livelihood. Examples of these commissioned pieces of art can be found in museums and art collections around the world.
The Art of Ships specializes in commissions for ship artwork and portraiture. Several general styles are described below but the key element of commissioned work is the incorporation of unique input from the person commissioning the artwork. No gift can equal an original, commissioned piece of artwork, especially in the nautical world.
Dramatic scenes and
colors are produced when the artist paints with oils on canvas. Museum
quality artwork is the result. Oil portraiture sizes range from 14” x 18” up to
very large canvases of 6 ft in width. Prices start from $550 for a framed 14”
x 18” commissioned work. See the Gallery section for
other examples of oil portraiture and currently available oil paintings.
Multi-ship profile prints and Service collages
If you desire to show several ships
together, such as all the ships someone has served on during
their career (service collage), the multi-ship profile print fits the bill.
Ships are shown to scale with each other and arranged for best appearance or in
chronological order. Prices start from $110 for an unframed 12” x 18”
commissioned work, $180 framed and mounted.
Modern vintage originals
A unique style, even in the traditional world of nautical art, modern
vintage prints emulate the classic travel
posters of
the last century, with your
ship as the subject. Created using computer graphics, the artwork is
nevertheless unique and one of a kind. Text, like that found on old travel
posters can be added as desired. Prices start from $400 for an unframed 17” x
22” commissioned work, $496 framed and mounted. See the Modern Vintage section
for more information on this artwork style. See the Gallery section for
available vintage prints at low
prices.
